My new Batik Collection

I am now home in Sussex, feeling the chill and trying to keep all my wonderful experiences fresh in my mind. A good time to unpack my batik purchases and enjoy them all over again.

The batiks that I bought were mainly directly from the artists or makers, ranging from Mufidah’s natural indigo dyed pieces, Tatang’s fiery abstracts, Joko’s beautiful sarong, Mr Trisno’s dancers, to Agus’ and Nia’s delicate silk batiks. I also bought a few batiks from the market in Solo and a batik factory in Yogyakarta to balance my collection.

All the batiks are very individual in style, from traditional batik Tulis to contemporary brush and stamp work. I think my selection gives a good indication of the breadth of batik being made in Java today and will provide the foundations of my new batik collection.

    Pat told me you were back and I felt really disappointed that I would no longer be receiving your lovely descriptions so it was a real bonus to find your final bulletin this evening with the beautiful batik images. What a wide range of styles and designs you have accumulated!
    I hope you soon recover fully from your upset tum and re acclimatise to our horrid weather. I look forward to talking to you.

    It has been so good receiving all your travel news. I, too, wish you were going to find more wonders!
    A batik collection sounds like the very best thing to start as a result of all your discoveries. It would be very good to see it one day.
